Design Specification

  1. Interaction Design

A: Scenario

The Ocean Expedition is an interactive installation using Kinect and Processing to visualize their own definitions of unboundedness of Art. Participants will see an abstract oceanic environment on screen. When participants wave their hands or move their bodies, they will see a fluid beam of Bezier lines simulating the oceanic creatures and water waves. Participants will imagine themselves in the deep ocean and enjoy themselves in the virtual and unbounded space. As participants move their body and engaged in the virtual digital environment, they will have a better understanding of the unboundedness between nature and art in real-time.

Flow Chart :

2. Goal

My goal is to build the connection of unboundedness between art and nature. Ocean, as part of the nature, has beautiful Bezier lines and its own abstract meanings. Participants will image themselves diving in the deep ocean when they move their body to interact with it.

3. Participants

My typical participants would be people who are curious of and have great interest in the ocean world. Participants would be the people who like exploration. Participants would like to use their body gestures to paint and create beautiful patterns in the virtual world and in real-time. Participants would be amazed by being visualized of their bodies.

4. Creative Approach/Style

Basically, participants would be engaged in creating their own oceanic painting by moving their bodies. Meanwhile, they will feel like they are diving in the deep sea. The visual part and the real-time interaction will be the most attraction that participants will have their interests in. Generally speaking, the theme of the connection between ocean and art, could be extended as the connection between nature and art. They both have their own mysteries, unboundedness, and invisibility.

The constraints and risk factor that I will face in undertaking this project would be the programming part. How to make the visual effect adorable and beautiful? And also the fade in fade out effect would be the programming part I want to explore. After have testing in Processing, how to combine the code in Processing and Kinect libraries would be another challenge I will face. The source of my visual content will be programming and revising the code of particle system from both examples in Processing and openProcessing. I would like to re-compose the music from internet as my audio part.
